Denis Yarygin: A Reengineering of Educational Programmes Was Carried Out at Sevastopol State University
Sevastopol State University has started the admission campaign for prospective new students, and everyone is already wondering what has changed or will change in the new academic year regarding educational policy. Denis Yarigin, Vice-rector for Academic Affairs, spoke about innovations in the educational programmes of the university. In 2018, freshmen from eight of the ten institutes in the University will begin training on updated programmes. The programmes of the Institute of Nuclear Energy and Industry and the Maritime Institute will be modernized in the near future.Modernization means that all the academic programmes will have compulsory disciplines and practices in general education.Students will also be given the opportunity to choose the trajectory of their training.English languageThis year will see the introduction of a foreign language for students of all specialties, including those in a technical sphere. The change is aimed at developing the universal communicative competence of future graduates and will be conducted throughout the entire period of their study. In the first year, students will be divided into groups according to their level of knowledge. From the first year up to their graduation they will study a foreign language, gradually raising their level of competence in it. It is planned that in the last year of their respective courses, profile disciplines will be read both in Russian and in English.Mathematics and physicsFor technical specialties, mathematics and physics will overlap. Freshmen will be tested and divided into groups. For groups with a lower post-secondary level of training, additional elective courses will be organized, which will raise the knowledge of the exact subjects to above an average level.Technology of personal developmentThe module "Technology of Personal Development" is aimed at career planning. At the outset, students will be given a task to set a plan for the future: who they see themselves at the beginning of their training and what they will achieve by the end of fourth year. Each year, the achievements will be assessed in accordance with the intended scenario.Choice of trajectoryAfter enrollment, students will choose an individual trajectory of training in the areas of entrepreneurship, research and professional or managerial activities. Tutors will help to find the directions of development during practical lessons dedicated to the technology of professional development. After testing and choosing the trajectory for each student, they will form an individual curriculum and an individual program for the entire period of study.Compulsory practical workFor the first time at the University there will be practical work in general education – where students will be given the choice of being either a volunteer, a holiday camp counselor or learning more about patriotism.
