Open architectural competition «Petersburg style»

On 5th September, 2016 at St.-Petersburg university of state architecture and civil engineering the beginning of an open architectural competition «Petersburg style» was declared.

The organizer of the creative competition is the Committee on town-planning and architecture of St.-Petersburg. The competition, in which young architects will take part (aged till 35 years), is focused on the search of new decisions in the field of town-planning. Its main objective is the creation of the model of conformity of the inhabited environment quality to town-planning, historical and cultural, natural and social contexts of St.-Petersburg. Using various architectural means, the participants should develop the project of development and construction of two city territories (on a choice): Kupchino and Rzhevka-Porokhovye.

The competition start «Petersburg style» was declared by the chairman of the Committee on town- planning and architecture and by the main architect of the city V.A.Grigoriev in a boardroom of the Academic council of SPSUACE: «We are facing an important task - to make our city have its own unique face. It concerns not only its historical part, but also all its huge territory which is a subject to inhabited and public construction. In spite of the fact that the architecture has become international, each city should have its own originality. For example, new quarters of St.-Petersburg should differ qualitatively from new quarters of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, etc. It would be desirable to hope that on the base of competitive works we will reach understanding what kind of modern architecture young generation in our city fancy. It is not excluded that later these principles will be considered at the level of town-planning regulation».

The rector of SPSUACE E.I.Rybnov welcomed visitors and expressed words of gratitude for the initiative of carrying out the competition within the precincts of the university to the Governor of northern capital G.S.Poltavchenko, and also the Committee on town-planning and architecture of St.-Petersburg: « Organization of city competitions among young architects within the precincts of our high school becomes a kind tradition. Two years ago we had a competition on the concept of the Museum of blockade of Leningrad. And now there is even a more significant project! I hope that its result will be a new model of construction which will correspond on the one hand to XXI - century tendencies, and on the other hand- to answer historical and cultural traditions of the city on the Neva». Besides, the rector reminded that soon SPSUACE will celebrate the 185^th anniversary from the date of the foundation and he wished successes and expressed a hope that the participation in the competition of university students will be a good gift to so important date of the university.

On behalf of the Union of architects of St.-Petersburg the president of the organization O.S.Romanov congratulated young people with the beginning of a new stage of learning: «This academic year you are beginning with a very interesting and difficult theme - working on an image of St.-Petersburg. This project should be considered not only from the architectural point of view, but philosophical as well, since each city has its own face. You will have a very serious work on creation of the aim, a super task which solving should aspire you. I am sure that this way you will, certainly, manage to create something new and original».

Application forms for the participation in the competition will be accepted till November, 1st, 2016. Following the results of the competition winners will be declared, and authors of the best three works will receive monetary awards from 200 to 500 thousand rubles.
