22nd of June – the Day of Memory and Grief

According to the Presidential Decree of June 8, 1996 № 857 22nd of June is declared the Day of Memory and Grief. This is a special day for every citizen of our country. June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union, beginning the most bloody and brutal war in the history of mankind. The exact number of those killed in this war can not be determined. According to various sources, the Soviet Union lost around 27 million people. Millions of people went missing, lost health, family and loved ones.

However, our country has survived, revealing a worldwide unsurpassed model of heroism and courage. At the cost of huge losses, our people not only gave repel the invaders, but also made a decisive contribution to Europe's liberation from fascism. We should not forget the lessons of history. We should not forget those, thanks to whom we are living in a free and safe world.
