Sevastopol State University Will Train Specialists in Underwater Robotics

Master’s degree students studying ‘Underwater Robotics’ at Sevastopol State University will not only obtain relevant knowledge and competencies for modern economics, but also directly be involved in the development of an anthropomorphic underwater robot, that is designed to make it easier for and replace the work of, a diver. “We will integrate this educational program into a research project for the development of a new underwater robotic complex. Students will be engaged in the development of individual subsystems for the complex related to technical 3D vision underwater, the development of maps of the sea bottom and control algorithms for underwater manipulators. We will be able to employ the most qualified Master’s students in a research laboratory for direct work on the project as part of a research group, ”said Alexey Kabanov, Head of the Department of Informatics and Systems and Control Engineering at Sevastopol State University. Sevastopol State University is engaged in the creation of an underwater anthropomorphic manipulator in the framework of the federal target program for a grant from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. The university won a competition in which 500 scientific institutions of Russia took part. Partners of the project, that is envisaged to last for three years, are JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and JSC Android Production Association. In addition to participating in a specific project, Master’s students will be able to choose a research trajectory for further study in a postgraduate course and form competencies that are relevant to technology markets: digital design and modeling, methods of artificial intelligence, technical vision, neural networks and fuzzy logic plus technologies for creating autonomous control systems. The graduates will be in demand in state corporations interested in the development of the underwater robotics industry, such as USC, Rostec, Rosneft, Gazprom, as well as in the structures of the Navy and the Russian Academy of Sciences working in the field of underwater robotics.
