55 years later… Meeting of students of the special faculty – alumni of Leningrad civil engineering institute of 1960

On October 03, 2015 at Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering there was held a meeting of graduates of the specialized naval faculty (Engineering naval faculty, since 1957 – military engineering faculty) of Leningrad civil engineering institute (former name of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering).

Engineering naval faculty – Military engineering faculty (the faculty was also named “v/ch 39033 KBF”, i.e. military unit of the Red Banner Baltic fleet) was established in Leningrad civil engineering institute in 1952. It was founded for training military engineers and their further distribution over the naval fleets of the Soviet Union with the purpose of engineering and exploitation of naval bases. The education lasted 5 years. After the 3rd course trogs were given lieutenancy. Next two years they studies as officers and graduated from the Institute as lieutenant-engineers.

In 1957 the faculty was disbanded due to reduction of the Soviet Army at 1,2 mln people. The last graduation of the Engineering naval faculty – Military engineering faculty took place in 1958. In 1961 last students, who were transferred to the civil faculties – civil engineering (specialty Industrial and civil engineering) and mechanical, graduated the Institute. In total 750 people graduated from the Engineering naval faculty – Military engineering faculty. Among those alumni there are:

  • vice-minister of defense of the USSR in engineering and troop housing Colonel general N.V. Chekov (1931–1996);
  • director of “Severvoenmorstroy” (Authority of the North fleet engineering) major-general Yu.V. Chumachenko (1934–1992), in memory of whom there was named a street in Zaozersk of Murmanskaya region;
  • opera singer (bas), People’s artist of the USSR (1976) E.E. Nesterenko (born in 1938), who was the main singer of the troop.

On October 03, 2015 in the Museum of history of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering there gathered graduates of the Industrial and civil engineering and Mechanical faculties of Leningrad civil engineering institute of 1960, who entered the Naval engineering faculty in 1955. In 1955-1957 they were trogs of this faculty, and in 1958-1960 they were civil students. Since 1961 alumni have annual meetings; this year they celebrate the 55th anniversary of graduation from the higher education institution, but even today they are proud to be called special faculty students.

At the meeting on October, 03 there were 14 students of the special faculty: Boris N. Belyaev, Eduard P. Guridin, Oleg N. Kabashnev, Igor E. Kononov, Viacheslav M. Kriuchkov, Vladimir V. Lagunov, A.A. Larionov, Gennady A. Nikulin, Vladimir B. Osherov, Vladimir E. Petrov, Yury E. Savvin, Valery V. Sokolov, Zakhar S. Stelmakh and Boris P. Chepurin.

Veterans of the special faculty of Leningrad civil engineering institute had a vivid and warm talk remembering the years of studies. Most graduates of the Faculty were awarded the honorary title “Honorary engineer of RSFSR” and other republics. They worked as directors of engineering companies, heads of authorities, house-building enterprises, and general directors of joint - stock companies. They are sure they were lucky: after graduation of one of the best faculties they lived a good professional life having a diploma of Leningrad civil engineering institute. They never betrayed the Motherland, the profession and the student friendship.
